Curious about crypto? Columbia SoCal is pleased to welcome Prof. Omid Malekan, who currently teaches the MBA course “An Introduction to Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies," in advance of his forthcoming book Re-Architecting Trust: the curse of history and the crypto cure for money, markets and platforms. In this virtual talk, Prof. Malekan will provide us a high-level overview of the burgeoning blockchain and cryptocurrency space.

About Re-Architecting Trust: the curse of history and the crypto cure for money, markets and platforms

Trust is the glue that holds society together. It manifests itself in our most important interactions: the money that we use, the financial intermediaries we rely on and the online algorithms that insreasingly control everything. But trust is also fallible, and the decline of our existing frameworks is apparent everywhere. Currencies are rife with inflation, big banks need ever bigger bailouts and social media platforms radicalize our friends.

Re-Architecting Trust is an exploration of how the technology that enables Bitcoin is now being applied to everything else, reinvigorating existing frameworks and enabling new ones: apolitical money minted by an algorithm, inclusive financial services that let amateurs take on the pros, and new business models for aritsts. An eight-year veteran of the crypto industry, Omid Malekan breaks down the critical issues we face and shows how they are getting worse. He explains how they’ve evolved and why they must evolve further. No pie-in-the-sky fantasy, and highlighting both the benefits and challenges of this new approach, Malekan paints a compelling picture of where we are headed and how you can can join the revolution.
